Time it Right

The timing of starting your business will have an effect on how soon your first tax bill is payable.

If you start your business anytime between 6th April 2025 and 5th April 2026, you will need to file a personal tax return for the 2025/26 tax year onwards.

If you are thinking about starting your business late in the tax year, you may wish to delay until 6th April; this small delay will give you an extra year before your first tax return needs to be prepared and filed.

For example:
If you were to start your business on 1st May 2025, your first tax return will be required for the 2025/26 tax year. The deadline for online filing of this return, and paying the associated taxes, will be 31st January 2027.

However, if you started your business two months earlier, on 1st March 2025, your first tax return will be required for the 2024/25 tax year. The deadline for online filing of this return, and paying the associated taxes, will be 31st January 2026.
